Lowe's - Rte. 3 & King Street, Ellsworth, ME.jpg - Lowe's - Route 3 & King Street, Ellsworth, MELocated on a 17.70-acre site comprising a portion of a previously approved commercial subdivision, Lowe’s of Ellsworth presented a number of engineering challenges during the design phase of the project. In addition to the necessary minimization of wetland impacts, topographical and groundwater considerations played important roles in shaping the layout of the development. With the inclusion of a retaining wall over 1,800 feet long and over 25’ in height in some locations, potential wetland fills were reduced by nearly two acres. This structure came with the added benefit of allowing the Lowe’s building to remain in a position directly visible from the nearby U.S. Route 3, a busy commercial corridor. As mitigation, the project has enabled the preservation of over 25 acres of land adjacent to a nearby private wildlife refuge and the restoration and preservation of another degraded site elsewhere in the City. Combined with an extensive stormwater management and treatment system and a detailed landscaping plan, these efforts demonstrate the abilities of Jones & Beach to effectively balance ecological concerns and local interests with the economic realities of modern commercial development.
